Legend:
- Salvation is Secure
- You can lose your salvation
Discussion:
- Nothing can separate us from God's love. Love is unconditional
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 8:38-39- The love of God, or at least the Son seems somewhat conditional. It can be lost if we do not obey God.
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love." -John 15:9-10
- The love of God, or at least the Son seems somewhat conditional. It can be lost if we do not obey God.
- Salvation is based on belief and not on your actions (good or bad). Committing a sin does not remove you from it.
"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:. . ." John 3:36
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16- What if you lose your belief?
- What if you lose your belief?
- The bible says those who are saved "have" eternal life in the present tense. If we could lose it in the future then having eternal life at the time of salvation would not actually be a true statement. We did not have it, because we would have lost it later.
John 3:36: "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.. ."
John 5:24: "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life."
John 6:35-37: Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out."
John 3:15-18 “that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son”.
1 John 5:11-13: And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.
2 Corinthians 6:2 "(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)"
- Salvation can not be earned, as such it cannot be lost by something you do/don't do.
" Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us. . ." Titus 3:5
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8,9
2 Corinthians 5:19: ...that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
- Salvation is the free gift of God. If we had to work to keep it, then it would no longer be a free gift.
". . . the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
". . .by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life." Romans 5:18
Romans 11:29: For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
Ephesians 2:4-6: But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved — and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus...- however, I believe that God allows us to give back that gift
- however, I believe that God allows us to give back that gift
- Salvation is a new birth. You cannot be unborn. Otherwise this would logicaly defeat the purpose of using this phrase. it is compared with the natural birth.
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3
1 Peter 1:3-5: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
- Someone born again can no longer be corrupted away from God.
1Peter 1:23: "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."
1 John 3:9: No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.
1 John 5:4-5: For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
- There is a permanent change that takes place
1 Corinthians 15:10: But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
. I John 2:19 suggests that those who acknowledge Christ initially, but deny Him later, are not saved to begin with: "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us." This shows the permancy of the change for those who actually are saved.
- Once you are born again spirituality — you become a child of God.
My children will always be my children. We may have troubled times. Our fellowship may be broken, but our relationship can never be broken. They will always be my children. Nothing or nobody can change that! And once you are born again spiritually — God becomes your Father — nothing or nobody can change that! Your fellowship may be broken, but your relationship can never be broken!
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, . . ." 1 John 3:2
- We are no longer under a spirit of bondage that would lead us from God. We have become childrend of God
"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father." Romans 8:15
- Nothing can seperate us from the love of God
Romans 8:35: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
Romans 8:38-39: For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
--- this verse is clearly talking about God's unconditional love towards man, not unconditional salvation. Salvation is conditional! You might also notice that the word "sin" was not included in the list of things which are unable to separate us from the love of God.
--- All of God's promises are conditional. God's love to us is unconditional, but His promises are conditional, meaning, if you do this, I will do this
- No one can pluck us from the Father's hand
"My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand." John 10:29
John 10:27-29: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand."
- Jesus promised He will never leave us. Jesus could not say this if there was even a chance of losing our salvation.
". . .for he hath said, I will never leave you, nor forsake thee." Hebrews 13:5
". . . and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." Matthew 28:20
- Jesus will not casat out those who came to him
John 6:35-37: Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out."
- We are complete in Christ. No more work nees to be done. He has perfected us forever. The work is done. Saved with a perfect Salvation
"And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:" Colossians 2:10
"By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once fo rall. . . For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." Hebrews 10:10,14
"Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him,. . ." Hebrews 7:25
- We are preserved in Christ. The doctrine of the "Perseverance of Saints"
"Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:" Jude 1
"And The LORD. . . will presere me unto his heavenly kingdom:. . ." 2 Timothy 4:18
Psalms 20:6: Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand.
Psalms 31:23: Love the LORD, all you his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.
Psalms 37:28: For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.
Psalms 55:22: Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalms 125:1-2: They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lor
- Believers in Christ will never perish.
John 10:27-30: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no-one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no-one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one”.
John 10 don't forget impahis is on "Will not Perish". We will not perish on our own, but also adds that nothing can force them out
John 3:15-18 “that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
- God keeps us from losing our Salvation
"Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy," Jude 24
Isaiah 46:3-4: Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from before your birth, carried from the womb; even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.
Jeremiah 32:39-40: I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them. I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.
2 Thessalonians 3:3: But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
2 Timothy 1:12: ...which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me.
2 Timothy 2:13: ...if we are faithless, he remains faithful — for he cannot deny himself.
1 Corinthians 1:6-8: ...even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you — so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:9: Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24: Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
Hebrews 9:12: ...he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
Hebrews 13:20-21: Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
"It is God who makes us stand firm in Christ" (2 Corinthians 1:21).
Psalms 121:2,3,7,8 - My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. The Lord will [a]protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The Lord will [b]guard your going out and your coming in From this time forth and forever.
Hebrews 7:24-25 - 24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to save [i]forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
- God will finish the work he completed in us.
Philippians 1:6: And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
- We are sealed by God
"And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." Ephesians 4:30
Ephesians 1:13-14: In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Hebrews 6:17-19: So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain...
- We have become a member of the body of Christ. An ubreakable union.
"For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones." Ephesians 5:30
"Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular." 1 Corinthians 12:18
- If there is nothing we can do (no sin committed) that would stop/prevent God from Saving us, what then could we do that would void that Salvation?
If Salvation can still be given, covering all sin, why would a new sin change that fact? Why would savlation all of a sudden be limited by a new sin after having been able to cover all sin that could have possibly been committed?
- No Condematino for those in Christ
Romans 8:1: There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
- Those who are truly saved will continue with Christ. It is not questionable, becuase if they didn't it shows they were never really saved.
1 John 2:19: They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
- Jesus will lose none that are given to him
John 17:2,12: "...since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him." (12) "While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled."
- Fear of God
A Christian should not be living a life of sin , but should fear God, as the Bible says quite clearly that we must
Luke 12:5 "But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!
Acts 10:34-35 - "...I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, 35but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him
1Pet 2:17 - Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the Emperor.
- It is a dangerous doctrne that leads people to believer they are saved when they are not. Some even think they can live their life however they like.
These teachers say that the formula “Once saved, always saved” gives us an excuse to sin because although we may lose a “reward” from God, we will still get to heaven.
Indeed, the Bible never guarantees that people who persist in living a sinful life will get to heaven. Instead we are repeatedly warned about the danger of sin, for example:
Galatians 5:19-21 “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
- Immediate losing of Salvation
If someone lied right before getting in car crash. Unless they could repent after they had lied , they would not be saved, irrespective of any past commitment to the Lord Jesus.
Exodus 20:16; "Thous shall not lie"
Matt 5:17-21; - Old laws did not pass away
Matt 15:18-20; 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Matt 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness
Rom 1:18-32 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
James 2:10-11; For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
- For people who believe that “once saved, always saved” I rhetorically ask: how do you relate your beliefs to Matthew 13: 20-21? If a man cannot lose his salvation then why would Jesus say: “When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away”?

- What about the "backslider" or somebody that forsakes the Lord? The Bible says he will suffer loss (rewards, etc.) — but he himself shall be saved!
- "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire." 1 Corinthians 3:11-15

- But what if I sin an awful sin?
- 1 Corinthians 5 reports of an awful sin in the church. And even though Paul commands ". . . To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh" — Paul still speaks of that person being saved — ". . .that the spirit may be saved. . ."
"It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife. . .To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may b

- If salvation is secure, then why don't we know we are saved? Why do people doubt their salvation?
- They trust in feelings rather than the word of God.
"He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool:. . ." Proverbs 28:26
They are confused by the simplicity of salvation.
"But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ." 2 Corinthians 11:3
They trust in tradition or church teachings rather than the word of God.
"Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition,. . ." Mark 7:13
They trust in their own righteousness.
". . . and all out righteousness are as filthy rags;. . ." Isaiah 64:6
They misapply and misunderstand scriptures.
They misapply scriptures such as Matthew 24:13, Hebrews 10:26 to the church age of grace, when they doctrinally apply to the tribulation or the millenium.
They have never been saved.
"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;. . ." Matthew 7:21
- They trust in feelings rather than the word of God.
- There is no reason to strive for Holiness, or Sanctification, if you follow the Eternal Security road. There ceases to be a price for disobedience. There ceases to be a need for choice anymore. What there is in the Eternal Security realms is a large number of Lukewarm Christians, with little or no regard to the scaring of the name of Christ that is happening.
