Discussion:
- Jesus drank wine on several occasions. "For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon!' The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'" (Luke 7:33-34 NASB)
- This does not say he drank wine. It is just what his enemies were calling him. They have also said he had a devil (John 7:20, 8:48), but he had nothing to do with having a devil. In the same sense they may have called him a drunkard, but had nothing to do with wine. We shouldn't define Jesus by His mockers
- If you look at the contrast that is being presented you will see it correlates with John drinking no wine. Jesus was the opposite of "drinking no wine" in that he did "come eating and drinking" and so was accused "a drunkard".

- Jesus also drank wine on the cross. "... Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, 'I am thirsty.' A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit." (John 19: 28-30 NASB)
- Jesus used wine at the last supper. The drink was from the "fruit of the vine" (Matthew 26:29 NKJV)
- The last supper was during the "first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread" (Matthew 26:17 NKJV) During this time the jews were told to "...remove leaven from your houses..." (Exodus 12:15) Leaven is what makes wine ferment, but it would not have been in the house Jesus ate at. Also for the passover the jews were told "For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land. 'You shall eat nothing leavened...'" (Exodus 12:19-20)

- Jesus was a Nazarite and would not have been able to drink wine.
- He was a Nazarene not a Nazarite. There is no indication he took the Nazarite oath

- Alcohol is good for you.
- Not the alcohol? Grapes? New studies? loose brain cells?

- Paul recommends drinking wine. "No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities" (1 Timothy 5:23 NKJV)
- We have the freedom to drink wine. "Everything is permissible' - but not everything is beneficial. 'Everything is permissible'- but not everything is constructive" As long as we used it constructively/responsibly it should be fine.
- "You, my brothers, were called to be free, But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love" (Galatians 5:13 NIV) This is not an excuse. If something is wrong then we shouldn't use our freedom to indulge in it.
- Even if it seems drinking is ok, please check your motives. God looks at our hearts (1 chronicles 28:9, Proverbs 16:2, 1 corinthians 4:5). If you are drinking to get a buzz then your motives are impure. This is the first stage of drunkenness and we know what the bible says about drunkenness.

- "A bishop then must be blameless... sober... Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;" (1 Tim 3:2-3 KJV) Surely alcohol is something we should avoid if you can not drink it to be an overseer/bishop of a church. Especially since he is comparing it with being greedy, a striker, and covetous. This is obviously something bad.
- Some translations for 1 Tim say, "not addicted to wine", like the NASB. This would imply it is ok to drink, but not be addicted/mastered/drunk by it.

- "Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise." (Proverbs 20:1)
- "Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors" We shouldn't give wine to other people. Why then should we drink it and sell it to others
- This is a common misuse of scripture. It actually says. "Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies". The problem is "pouring it... till they are drunk" and the reason so we "can gaze on their naked bodies". This does not speak about simply giving someone a drink responsibly. This verse would speak against getting your friend drunk or drugging them by spiking their drink
- I would also add that this would imply drunkenness is not a joke. Yes our drunk friend might be funny, but we should not encourage them to be drunk for a laugh (to "gaze on their naked bodies"). This would also seem to speak against date rape.
- If this just meant to give a drink then Jesus would have been guilty at the last supper. "Then He took the cup, ... and gave it to them" (Matthew 26:27 NKJV)

- Proverbs tells us wine is bad. "Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long over wine, Those who go to taste mixed wine. Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly; At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things and your mind will utter perverse things." (Proverbs 23: 29-33)
- We should not engage in drinking parties. "For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you;" (1 Peter 4:3-4) Some translations to not say "Drinking Parties", but the definition of carousing is a drinking revel- party/festival/celebration. Basically we should not get together to have a good time where the ingredient is alcohol.
- "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2) We should not engage in drinking parties anyway for to do so is to cast our vote that we do not care about alcohol being abused unless we clearly let others know our stance

- Alcohol ruins the lives of people. It changes people, like a drug, and is a major cause of domestic abuse, fatal car accidents, and date rape
- These are very unfortunate things and no one here would wish any of these, but anything can be abused. This is why we should not get drunk. Please drink responsibly!

- The wine Jesus used was not alcoholic
- Jesus' first recorded miracle was changing water to wine. The book of Romans tells us "... put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts" (Romans 13:14 NSASB) Jesus would not have made alcoholic drink because it would have been a provision for the flesh. Instead this was an unfermented drink.
