How can I be sure I am saved?

A common doubt that may come to a christian's mind is if they are truly saved. Is there anyway we can know? There must be some standard or assurance God has to offer.

Discussion:

One of the best ways to know, is to look at the points in 1 John. It was written so that we may know. "These Things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life..." 1 John 5:18

1 John
1:6-7 Walking in light(God's principle) or in darkness(world's system)
2:3-5 Obeying god's Commandments
2:15 Love/prefer spiritual or worldly things
3:6-9 Willful sin or unwilling sin
3:14-19 Love for brothers in Christ
5:3-5 Victory in life over the things of the world
8:31-32 Hunger for the truth/word
